People ask me on a daily basis, "How did you grow your following on Facebook?" (26,000 followers) or "How did you get so many Twitter followers?" (55,000) or "How do you have so many people following you on LinkedIn?" (600,000).
I tell people the truth: creating and sharing lots of great content, sharing lots of other people's great content, a little advertising money, and a lot of blood, sweat and tears. I tell people that time is the most important factor in building a social media following. That's all true.
But I'll let you in on a secret that I've never shared before - not in any of my books, articles, or interviews.
It's not just putting in the time that matters, in a building a social media following. It's putting in the time at the right time that matters.
Timing is everything - in business, in relationships, and in life. SO of course timing is important in building a social media following.
I was a relatively early adopter of Facebook for business and brand-building, so I was able to build a following of 26,000 people there while my peers were playing Farmville on Facebook.
I was a relatively early adopter of Twitter for business and brand-building, so I was able to build a following of 55,000 people there while my peers were tweeting what type of cereal they had for breakfast that day.
I was an extremely early adopter of LinkedIn for business and brand-building, so I was able to build a following of 600,000 people there while others were looking at job posts.
By the way, I haven't just built these following on social networks for fun: I've driven thousands of leads and millions of dollars of revenue across my two businesses, all from my social media following.
Here's the great news:
Even if you weren't an early adopter of Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn for business, there's still time for you.
You can still catch up on those networks.
Better yet, you can still become an early adopter of Instagram for business, or Snapchat for business, or Musical.ly for business, or the next-unnamed-social-network for business and brand building.
Sure, some of these networks might not work out in the long run for business. (Remember Myspace?!) But it just might be worth the effort to be a early adopter, no?
It's about time, but it's about timing too.
